West Africa Carved Ivory Horn
Region: West Africa
Length: 25”
Price: $5000 + $40 shipping

Here we have a beautiful ivory horn from Benin, West Africa. Extremely well carved, the tip is incised to form a headdress. Below the headdress is an angular face. Going up the horn, there are three faces on each side. The faces start out simply and become more elaborate as they go upward. While the faces appear to be the same on each side, they are, upon closer examination, different in detail. The top face is crowned with a powerful headdress that looks like the horns of a ram. Crowning the top of the horn on the one side is the tree of life. At the top of the other side is a thatched hut. There is an incised snake writhing up the inside curve of the horn. Over the years the ivory has developed a deep, rich reddish patina.
