. Mossi Karanga Mask
Region: Burkina Fasso
Size: 62”H
Price:: $650 + $35 shipping

The tall "karanga'" masks, which are used in the traditional state of Yantega have, for decades, been considered the epitome of Mossi sculptural traditions. Northern style masks include a round or oval face, either concave or convex, pierced with triangular eyes. The face is surmounted by the head and horns of an antelope and a tall thin plank." These polychromatic masks, which have a totemic role, are worn during funeral ceremonies and to guard the crop. They are stored carefully when not worn and are given libations in exchange for help in everyday Mossi life. They were often symbolically buried in place of the owner's corpse immediately after death. This item was field-collected in the mid-80's, but exact age is unknown. The mask retains much of its polychromatic paint and features highly incised, very detailed carving.  Over five feet tall, it is one of the larger masks of this style we have seen
