Mwana Phwevo translates to “young woman” and refers to a mythical young woman who died young and whose loss the people grieve.  This exquisite mask has excellent color and patination and has very distinctive features.  The artist’s skill is seen in the careful carving of the eyes, nostrils and incised teeth. The puncture motif below the eyes on both cheeks may be tears.  The face is supplemented by a wig of plant fibers, adorned at the hairline by a string of glass beads. A top quality piece.
