This is a rare and most impressive older Chokwe peoples mask from Angola, West Africa.  The Chokwe "CIKUNGA" mask was used at initiation ceremonies and worn in the  event that a SPIRIT had to be exorcised from the village.  The mask, carved with a incredible facial grimace, has a woven basket as regalia with "dredlocks" of woven grass hanging down.  The mask shows signs of actual use and wear and the interior of the mask is also well worn.  Clearly an important mask to the Chokwe and a very stylized and striking mask for the discerning collector.
