This is a  "PWO" mask. from the Chokwe peoples and represents the ideal mother and woman.  The mask has an unusually realistic treatment to the face and the artist truly captured a moving and emotional expression.  This PWO mask is carved from a single piece of wood with a GORGEOUS and well polished patina. The deep reddish color is striking!  The mask also features a woven grass basket and wooden beads as regalia or "dreads"...The mask is too small to have been worn and may have served as a altar piece.
