This colorful dance shield with ornamental mask is a superb example of Songye stylized art.  The Songye people are ruled by the Kifwebe society for which the main emblem is the famous Kifwebe mask.  This Kifwebe dance shield was used in dances and ceremonies within the society and shows actual use and wear.  The interior and handle are very well worn and the mask has abstract designs and motifs of gorgeous color achieved from natural pigments and weathering.
