This is a very beautiful, flawless example of African ivory carving. This lovely piece is the Nigerian equivalent of a Madonna & child. Full breasted with a secret smile, this caramel colored queen sits upon a small stool or throne carved with the typical “evil eye” charms. With stylish hair and a conservative necklace, this gorgeous woman is confident and comfortable. Rather than seeming vulnerable in nudity, she is very serene and confident.  She is obviously a woman of great importance. All this can be discerned from the front, but when you turn her around, you are startled to discover there is a small child clinging to her back! This beautiful queen is a proud mother! You will be hard pressed to find another statue so wonderful, so unusual, so impressive.
