The leopard is undoubtedly, the animal of greatest significance in Benin royal art.  Benin castings of the leopard capture their powerful haunches, clawed paws, rich dappled coats and fierce, sharp toothed countenances. The leopard represents the Benin king (Oba) wisely restraining his limitless powers.  Only the Oba and his hunters were entitled to kill leopards and then, only for sacrificial purposes.
