This Yoruban bronze helmet mask is the Image of ORANMINYAN..a hero and God/King who is credited with bringing Benin into Life.  The helmet is full of motifs and images of importance.  The Bronze mask has several animal totems..lizards and insects on the King’s face and the tall tower has snakes coming from it in a comb like pattern.  These images suggest that the King, attacked by serpents, his face drawn taut and his smile a grimace is immortal.  Able to endure great hardship and mortal pain, this bronze helmet mask is a tribute to the King’s power to rule and lead his people through great hardship.
